How to motivate a kid

how to motivate a kid

One of the challenges of being a parent is learning how to motivate a kid throughout their development. Of course, we all know motivation is key, but it is still a challenge!

The good news is that it is possible to develop motivation from a very young age and that this process does not have to be tedious or hard. In fact, it can be a lot of fun and an opportunity to become closer to your child!

If you want to share moments with your child and motivate them to develop better, we share three tips on how to motivate a kid!

3 tips to motivate your child

1. Boost their curiosity

Since they are babies, children want to learn or experience new things. From a very young age, they search for sounds, lights, and textures. One thing parents can do is expose their children to different experiences and objects to further fuel their curiosity and desire to explore.

With new technologies, there are thousands of apps available that can keep children busy, but although some of them are educational, none can replace tangible exploration. Everyday situations and things, such as different toys or walks in the park, will make your child have fun and learn. If you exploit their imagination and curiosity, they’ll feel more motivated.

We’re not making this up, it’s science! According to the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University, motivation occurs when chemical signals are sent by neurons from certain areas of the brain to others. The experiences cause these chemical signals to happen and create a sense of reward. Such experiences are also connected to emotions and memories.

As you can see from the scientific explanation, exposing your child to new experiences, either with you or when they’re alone, is important to develop their motivation.

2. How to motivate a kid with realistic challenges

It is very common for children to be attracted to challenges in their daily life, from learning to stand up to achieving new goals throughout their development. However, if the challenges they face are too simple or too difficult, they may not want to attempt them.

It is important to “listen” to your child, to know what they like and what kinds of challenges they find interesting. For example, your kid may prefer artistic activities or physical games. Spending playtime with your child will help you learn about their interests.

3. Autonomy

It is important to give children some autonomy so that they can learn to be confident and brave enough to face future challenges.

To stay motivated, your kid must feel free to make certain decisions; always with your help and in a safe space, of course. You can encourage your little one to play alone or allow them to choose the type of activity or game that you will do together.
