First, it’s important to recognize those “communication roadblocks” that can sometimes trip us up:

  • Mind-reading. No, you’re not a mind-reader, so better listen to what your partner is really trying to say. And if they’re not saying anything, then ask! Some people need a little nudge to talk about how they’re really feeling.
  • Daydreaming. No thinking about the grocery list while talking, pay attention!
  • Rehearsing your response. Listen to understand, not to respond. It’s tempting, but let them finish speaking before preparing your answer.
  • Filtering. Listen to everything, the good and the not-so-good; it’s important to hear and understand it all.
  • Unrequested advice. Unless they’re explicitly asking for advice, let your partner vent and express their feelings. Sometimes we just need to let it all out and don’t want to her solutions.
  • Judging. Don’t play detective, listen without criticizing and with respect.
  • Being condescending. Each person’s point of view is valuable, don’t belittle what your partner says.

These tricks can help improve your communication and your relationship, so you can better face the challenges of parenthood. It’s normal to get distracted or want to defend your point, but keep in mind these things might be getting in the way of good and peaceful communication. The important thing is to be present, aware and willing. Listen attentively, let the other person finish speaking, and answer from a place of love and respect.
